Suboxone Talk Zone:  After Suboxone

Recordings to help reduce the damage from opiate dependence and pain pill addiction.

Jeffrey T Junig MD PhD

Board Certified Psychiatrist

I write as ‘SuboxDoc’ on SuboxoneTalkZone.com, where I discuss opiate addiction treatment options with particular attention to the use of Suboxone.  I am also featured at other sites, including MedWorm.com and MedHelp.org.

My primary work is as a solo-practice psychiatrist in Wisconsin.  I teach at the Medical College of Wisconsin I am Medical Director of Nova, a large AODA residential treatment center.  I have a weekly radio show about psychiatry and addiction.

I am a recovering opiate addict, a Board Certified Psychiatrist, a Board Certified Anesthesiologist (worked as an anesthesiologist for ten years), and a PhD Neurochemist. I used to be a pretty smart guy.... but it didn't protect me from losing everything to addiction. In fact, now that I treat addiction I see that the very 'smart people' tend, if anything, to do worse.

In these recordings I share what I have learned about addiction, based on:

-Treating hundreds of addicts, using either traditional treatment or using Suboxone;

-My training in psychiatry and experiences as a psychiatrist;

-My experiences treating chronic pain as an anesthesiologist for ten years;

-My Ph D work in neurochemistry studying receptor/transmitter interactions;

-Most important: what I have learned from being an opiate addict for over 15 years.

One caution.  Everything that an addict 'learns' is filtered through his/her addictive mind, and so the addict hears what the addict wants to hear. An addict who thinks he can cure himself through his own thinking alone will be sorely disappointed. What I learned as an addict came from the rare moments of desperation when I opened my mind to truly listen to an opinion from another recovering person-- an opinion that often ran counter to my own.

Addendum:  I have some additional thoughts about the tapering process based on feedback about the recordings from people who have tapered off Suboxone.  Please read the post from March 1, 2009 on Suboxone Talk Zone.

My goals in producing these recordings:

-To stop the destruction from active addiction using either Suboxone or residential treatment.

-If in sober-based recovery, to maintain remission of active symptom through active recovery.

-If using Suboxone, to facilitate and encourage proper and consistent use in order to stabilize social situations and extinguish conditioned behavior.

-After a sufficient period of stable and proper use, with the assumption that conditioned addictive behavior has been partially extinguished, to consider withdrawal from Suboxone.

-To facilitate discontinuation of Suboxone in a way that minimizes re-activation of active addiction and optimizes the chance for ongoing recovery.

-To judiciously use medication to avoid activating addiction but to minimize discomfort during Suboxone discontinuation.

-To provide inspiration for a life free from the misery caused by active addiction.

The Recordings:

Treatment Options for Opiate Dependence.

Presents the current options for treating this miserable condition.  Includes pros and cons of maintenance-based vs. sobriety-based treatment, considerations in choosing appropriate treatment, problems with current treatment approaches, and more.

Sobriety After Suboxone:  When to stop Suboxone?

How Long Should I Stay On Suboxone? Unfortunately there are no programs that are specifically designed to help people transition from buprenorphine to abstinence-based sobriety— at least none until now. I have put together information that will help you with that decision, and point you in the right direction should you decide to go forward with the transition. The information includes:

-A review of the actions of Buprenorphine and Suboxone;

-How to know when the time is right to make the transition;

-The people who should stay on Suboxone… indefinitely;

-Personality characteristics that suggest one should stay on Suboxone;

-How to prepare your mind for sobriety-based recovery;

Stopping Suboxone:  Reducing Withdrawal and Maintaining Sobriety

After a review of the considerations for going off Suboxone, this recording puts forward a plan for stopping Suboxone over a period of two months that virtually eliminates physical withdrawal, and suggests techniques to deal with psychological cravings.  Please note that the medications suggested to treat withdrawal must be prescribed by your physician, and that medication suggestions may not be appropriate for all people.

The most difficult part of stopping Suboxone, of course, is remaining clean from opiates afterward.  The recording suggests techniques to develop the attitude necessary for ongoing sobriety, using features from residential treatments, twelve-step meetings, and psychological theory.  The techniques should be used to augment, and not replace, one’s own recovery program.

New for Summer 09: How Long Are You Going To Take That Stuff?!

Many people doing great on Suboxone deal with this question from someone who means well, but who just doesn’t get it.  This recording explains the chronic nature of addiction and explains why chronic treatment is usually necessary.  A great gift for siblings, spouses, parents—  they won’t listen to you, but hopefully they will listen to me as I take on issues like ‘a drug for a drug’, ‘not really clean’, etc.  As with all the titles, the recording is in MP3 format.  You will receive the link after purchase;  you can then e-mail the recording, put it on an i-pod, or burn a CD.
